When a bespoke website build makes sense
Custom website development means we design and code the site for your business alone. There’s no purchased theme and no page builder carrying features you’ll never use. Every template, field and interaction exists because your content or your sales process needs it.
Plenty of businesses don’t need this. A clean WordPress theme setup handles a five-page service site well, and our small business websites package covers that. Custom work earns its cost when the site has to do something specific: show a filterable list of 400 properties, calculate a quote from inputs, pull stock levels from an ERP, or present a product line no template was designed for.
We also reach for custom builds when a business has been stuck fighting a theme for years, patching CSS overrides on top of overrides until nobody wants to touch the site.
Custom builds we’re asked for
Searchable directories and listings
Property listings, dealer locators, practitioner directories and course catalogs with filters, maps and SEO-friendly detail pages.
Quote and pricing calculators
Multi-step forms that work out an estimate from the visitor’s answers and send the lead, with the answers, to your CRM.
Resource libraries
Gated downloads, webinars and case study libraries that capture contact details and tag them by interest.
Multi-location sites
One site with a page per branch, each with its own hours, staff, reviews and LocalBusiness schema, managed from a single dashboard.
Data-driven pages
Pages built from a spreadsheet, API or database feed, such as inventory, rates, schedules or event listings that update without manual edits.
From brief to launch
- Requirements We document every page type, field, user action and data source in plain language. You approve the list so there are no surprises in scope.
- Information architecture We plan URLs, menus and internal links with search in mind, so service and location pages each target their own terms.
- Design Mockups for each template in Figma, mobile first. You sign off before development starts.
- Development We build on the stack that fits: WordPress with custom blocks, Next.js, or Laravel for app-like features. Code lives in Git from day one.
- Testing Cross-browser tests, form and data tests, Core Web Vitals checks and WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility checks on every template.
- Launch and handover Redirects, analytics, Search Console and backups set up, then documentation and a recorded walkthrough for your team.
Choosing the stack for custom work
Most bespoke marketing sites end up on WordPress with custom post types and blocks, because editors already know it. Sites where speed matters most, or where content comes from several sources, suit Next.js. When the project starts to look like software with user accounts, roles and workflows, we build it in Laravel.
If the site needs to share data with your CRM, accounting system or booking tool, our integrations and API developers build those connections as part of the same project. Need the build done faster? Ask about Claude-coded websites, where the same custom approach runs on a shorter timeline.
Questions we get about custom website development
Is a custom website harder to maintain?
It can be if the code is undocumented. We write a handover guide, keep everything in Git and stick to mainstream tools, so any competent developer can pick it up later. Our website maintenance plans cover updates if you’d rather not manage it.
Can I still edit content myself?
Yes. Every custom build comes with a CMS or admin area for the content that changes. We design the editing fields around your content, so updating a listing or a price doesn’t mean touching layout.
How do you price custom work?
We price after a free audit and requirements review, then send a written proposal with a fixed scope and price. For a rough idea first, try the website cost calculator.
Do you build from an existing design?
Yes. If your designer or brand agency has finished Figma files, we can build from them directly. We’ll flag anything that won’t work well on mobile or would hurt load times before we start.
What happens to my current site during the build?
It stays live. We build on a private staging link and only switch over once you’ve approved the finished site and the redirect map is ready.
