What Core Web Vitals measure
Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to judge page experience, based on data from real Chrome users. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) measures how long the main content takes to appear, with 2.5 seconds or less rated good. INP (Interaction to Next Paint) measures how quickly the page responds to taps and clicks, with 200 milliseconds or less rated good. CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) measures how much the layout jumps around while loading, with 0.1 or less rated good.
Google judges each metric at the 75th percentile of visits, so a page has to be fast for most visitors, not just on your office Wi-Fi. That’s why we work from field data in the Chrome UX Report and Search Console, and use Lighthouse lab tests to diagnose causes.
Speed matters beyond rankings. A slow page on a phone loses visitors before they see your offer, and every paid click that bounces is money gone.
How we fix LCP, INP and CLS
LCP fixes
Faster server response through caching and a CDN, correctly sized WebP or AVIF hero images, preloading the LCP image and removing render-blocking CSS and fonts.
INP fixes
Cutting and deferring heavy JavaScript, breaking up long tasks, removing unused third-party scripts like old chat widgets and trackers, and lighter event handlers.
CLS fixes
Width and height set on images and embeds, reserved space for ads and cookie banners, and font loading that doesn’t reflow text.
Hosting and caching
Page caching, object caching, Cloudflare in front of the site and a move to better hosting when the server itself is the bottleneck.
Plugin and theme cleanup
On WordPress, removing heavy page builders, sliders and overlapping plugins that load scripts on every page.
Third-party scripts
Auditing tags in Google Tag Manager and loading analytics, pixels and chat only where and when they’re needed.
Our speed process
- Measure We pull field data from Search Console and CrUX, then run Lighthouse and WebPageTest on each template type to find causes.
- Prioritize You get a written list of fixes ranked by impact and effort, with the templates that drive the most traffic first.
- Fix on staging Changes are made on a staging copy and tested for broken layouts, forms and tracking before going live.
- Deploy and verify We push fixes live and re-test in the lab right away. Field data in Search Console takes around 28 days to fully reflect changes, so we track it in follow-up reports.
Core Web Vitals fix deliverables
- Before and after Lighthouse reports per template
- Field data snapshot from Search Console at start and follow-up
- List of every change made, with the reason
- Image compression and modern format conversion
- Script and plugin audit with removals noted
- Recommendations for anything outside our scope, such as hosting upgrades
When speed fixes aren’t enough
Some sites are built on a theme or page builder that can’t get fast without being replaced. If we find that, we’ll say so and explain the options, from a lighter WordPress theme to a Next.js front end or a full website redesign.
To keep scores healthy once they’re fixed, a website maintenance plan rechecks Core Web Vitals on a schedule, so a new plugin or a large uploaded image doesn’t quietly undo the work.
Questions we get about website speed optimization
Can you get my PageSpeed score to 100?
We don’t chase a perfect lab score, and nobody should promise one. The Lighthouse score is a diagnostic tool. What Google uses for ranking is field data, so our goal is passing Core Web Vitals for real visitors on your key pages.
Why is my site fast on desktop but slow on mobile?
Mobile tests simulate a slower phone and network, so heavy JavaScript and large images hurt far more. Most real visitors to local and service businesses are on phones, which is why we prioritize mobile.
Will speed fixes break my site?
Every change goes through staging first, and we test forms, layouts and tracking before deploying. We keep a backup and can roll back any change.
Do faster pages rank higher?
Core Web Vitals are one of many ranking signals, and content relevance matters more. Speed gives you an edge when competing pages are similar, and it improves conversions regardless of rankings.
How much does speed work cost?
It depends on the platform and how many template types need work. Start with a free audit and we’ll send a fixed-price proposal.
